The birth of cabbage casserole goes back several centuries. It was created because less well-off families needed food that was durable, nutritious and easy to prepare.

The ancient method of preserving cabbage, pickling, also allows the preservation of flavors. Thus, cabbage is not only a good ingredient because it was also available as a fresh vegetable in winter, but also because it is simply delicious..

The layering of ingredients has long been a practical solution for preparing nutritious meals in such a way that huge amounts of ingredients that are more difficult or more expensive to obtain are not needed. In the case of cabbage casserole, the layers of sauerkraut alternate with the minced meat and rice mixture, which is often seasoned with marjoram, red pepper and other spices.

The popularity of cabbage casserole has remained unbroken throughout the ages, as this dish is perfectly suited to colder climates and the dietary habits of the people living there.

 

Heavenly cabbage casserole recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1  mug of rice
  • 60 dkg of sauerkraut
  • 2 red onions
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of ground paprika
  • 50 dkg minced meat
  • 3 dl sour cream
  • a little cooking oil (classic sunflower, but you can also use olive oil)
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • and you can also add some bacon, especially if you want a Transylvanian version

let's make it:

  1. Fry the rice in the oil until white, then add salt and cover with water and steam on low heat under lid.
  2. Wash the cabbage under cold water, then drain.
  3. Chop the onions and fry them in oil! Then take it off the heat and sprinkle the paprika on it, then add the minced meat too! Seasoning can come (salt, pepper and any spice that you think is good - for example, marjoram). Then fry well over medium heat.
  4. Layer the ingredients in a heat-resistant dish. Place the bacon in it too!
  5. Then put sour cream seasoned with salt and pepper on top!
  6. Bake in an oven preheated to 180 degrees for 20-25 minutes!
