Many people think that the chimney cake got its name from the horn instrument. However, this is a mistake! The name actually refers to the chimney. It is no coincidence that it is called "chimney cake" in English.

But why is this so?

Since the Middle Ages, bun has been a sweet version of bread that was baked on holidays. Chimney cake is a special version of this delicious cake, which first appeared in Transylvania.

The bun, baked over coals and wrapped in a wooden cylinder, is mentioned for the first time in a Transylvanian cookbook from 1581. It appeared in Pest in the 1800s, and Pest chefs and confectioners could read about it for the first time in a new edition of a Kassa cookbook. Since then, of course, the recipe has changed a lot, until finally the chimney cake that we know and love today was formed.
