Why do we paint eggs at Easter? 8 amazing egg compositions that will give you the answer
2018. 03. 25.
Easter egg painting has serious traditions in this country. On the other hand, it is less well known that it is a popular custom in almost the entire Carpathian basin, and even beyond, in the countries to the east of us..
The history of egg painting
The tradition of egg painting can be traced back to the distant past. Although 60,000-year-old (!) ostrich eggs decorated with carved designs were found in South Africa, it is more interesting from the point of view of the European culture that the Persians also decorated eggs, this mainly took place around the spring equinox - this was the time of the Persian New Year (norouz), at this time family members decorated eggs together. Presumably, the Christian tradition associated with Easter, which survived mainly in the eastern part of Europe, may also originate from here. Christianity probably took over Easter, the fasting before it, and egg painting together from the Persians, and the egg, as an ancient symbol of life, was connected to the celebration of the Resurrection. The color of Easter eggs is typically red because it symbolizes the blood of Christ.
As the centuries and millennia passed, it was possible to decorate the eggs in more and more spectacular and creative ways - just think of the Fabergé eggs made for the Russian Tsarist family, studded with precious stones, although they are not made of real eggs, but the principle is roughly the same.
