What is foodporn good for and how did it conquer the world?

What is foodporn?

According to Wikipedia, foodporn is a visual genre that presents cooking or nutrition in a spectacular form. The protagonists of the genre are mostly high-fat and high-sugar, high-calorie, inflated, poured-down, foamy-bean delicacies, or just exotic dishes that glorify eating or appeal directly as gastronomic creations that trigger sexual desire.

The term "food pornography" was first used by Frank Chins in his 1987 story "Railroad Standard Time". But according to relevant sources, it still became an independent term with Rosalinda Coward's 1984 book Female Desire. Among other things, the author talks about how a perfectly prepared and served meal is a symbol of devoted participation in serving others.

According to him, the term reflects this, and in this sense is also organically connected to the preparation of food (but the images themselves often overshadow the production process). The term therefore does not necessarily have a sexual content, as many may think. In the USA, for example, it is used much more in connection with fatty, sugary, unhealthy, but spectacular foods. What a denial, it's quite a strange and somewhat grotesque phenomenon, but if someone cultivates it tastefully, it usually results in very nice photos.

The popularity of foodporn

Nothing proves the unbroken popularity of foodporn better than the fact that, at the time of writing, there are more than 150 million pictures with the foodporn hashtag on Instagram. And YPulse research showed that 63% of people between the ages of 13 and 32 post photos of food on social media, and 57% of the same group post information about the food they're eating..

Hence, food and social media are increasingly connected.

But that's not the only place where the term appears: on TV, in the press or on the radio, many gastro programs use or touch on the phenomenon. It wasn't recently that foodporn was a really new topic. Much more so at the dawn of the gastro revolution, in the golden age of Instagram and food photography.

Dining Guide's relevant article on foodporn, for example, is from 2016. The text also refers to a research done by analyzing 10 million photos uploaded to social media. According to this, certain dishes are particularly popular in some countries. Dishes typical of local cuisine were mainly found in the United States, Italy and the United Kingdom in high percentages. In America, shrimp, bacon, tacos and sushi prevailed (although not specifically national dishes), while in Canada, for example, poutine was the winner (it's a type of French fries with sauce and cheese). Of course, there were also quite a lot of classic foods, the international favorite was pizza, and among the drinks, coffee was the best.
